Selection and Membership in NHS

Membership in the NHS is not a right of any student, but is an honor bestowed by the council based on the four criteria of selection listed below.

Each year, students, in grades 10-12 who have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 at the end of the first semester are notified that they are eligible to be considered by the Faculty Advisory Council for membership in the Edgewood-Colesburg chapter of the National Honor Society. At that time, students are given the opportunity to decline consideration by the council.

The council solicits opinions and information concerning eligible students from the staff to help assess the character, leadership, and service attributes of the candidates.  This information is compiled by the advisors into an anonymous format and distributed to the council to be studied and considered. The council then meets to discuss the merits of each candidate. The four qualities of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character are considered equally when making the decision.

Following this discussion the council cast an initial secret ballot. Candidates receiving 2 or 3 votes may be invited in for a private interview with the council. After a final secret vote is taken, in accordance with the NHS constitution, candidates receiving 3 or more of 5 votes are invited to membership.

Active members must maintain the minimum GPA and continue to display the attributes of leadership, service, and character through  participation in chapter activities and their personal behaviors both in and out of school.  Failing to do so can result in a student being placed on probation and puts them at risk of being permanently dismissed from membership. A member on probation will not be honored with recognition at any public event.
