Iowa Statewide Assessment of Student Progress (ISASP)

Dear Families,

Students in the Ed-Co School District, as well as students in other districts across the state have been assessed on an annual basis with the Iowa Assessments to measure student progress and to gather data necessary to inform our school improvement efforts.  In 2018, the Iowa legislature determined that all students in Iowa would be assessed using the new test called the Iowa Statewide Assessment of Student Progress (ISASP). The new assessment is developed and delivered by Iowa-based Pearson Education, Inc. The assessment is aligned with the Iowa Core standards and is intended to provide a clear and accurate assessment of student learning outcomes. Student growth, proficiency and readiness indicators will be reported.

Last spring, students in grades 3-11 took the Iowa Statewide Assessment of Student Progress (ISASP). All 3-11 grade students were assessed in reading, language, writing, and math.  Additionally, 5, 8 and 10 grade students were assessed in science. The ISASP was administered online. Taking the statewide assessment online was a new experience for our students. However, online testing is not new to our students. As early as 2nd grade our students begin taking online assessments in Math and Reading through the Measurement of Academic Progress (MAP) tests.

ISASP results are being sent home this week. Remember these new assessments are only given once a year and are just one snapshot in a student’s measure of academic progress.

Results could seem lower than expected, but students and staff will analyze the results and work to improve those areas. On the new ISASP, students are required to complete a writing piece which is new to Iowa Assessments.  Currently 6th and 9th grade students are in a pilot program of WriteToLearn, which uses technology to score essays created by students.

As always, I ask that you please become involved with the educational opportunities for our young people and assist us in making Edgewood-Colesburg the best school in the State of Iowa.  I thank you for taking the time to read this as we proceed through a very exciting 2019-2020 school year.
