Last day of school

School is now scheduled for July 4th.  Just kidding but with the extremely cold temperatures, freezing rain, fog, and snowfall; it does make us wonder when the last day of the 2018-19 school year will be.  As of Friday, February 7th, the Ed-Co School District had missed ten days which if all days were made up would make the last day Friday, June 7th.  The biggest problem with this plan is that during the 2017-18 school year we missed four days in March and April.  With the switch from 180 school days to 1080 hours, there is some flexibility in the options for making up time and scheduling.  The original calendar had an additional thirty-two hours above 1080.  Now the question is how to reach the required hours and options for the extra hours.

A survey was sent out to staff on Friday to consider making up instructional time on February 18, March 15, March 29, and April 19.  Along with making up instructional and/or professional learning on those dates, lengthen the school day has been mentioned.  The results of the survey will guide my recommendation to the board on a special meeting on Monday, February 11th.  Please continue to watch for updates in the paper and on the district’s website: www.edge-cole.k12.ia.us

Please remember that the best way to be notified of school early outs or a school cancellation is by signing up for text notification.  To sign up for elementary messages text @edcoe to 81010.  For secondary messages via text, text @edcoh to 81010.  It is also sent out to some of the local radio and TV stations, so please stay aware of those school alerts.

I would also like to thank all those who voted on February 5th.  With the passage of the voter-approved Physical Plant and Equipment Levy (PPEL), district facility and maintenance needs can be addressed in a timelier fashion.  The Board is working with architects and engineers to address heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning issues at the junior/senior high building; security at both buildings, and parking at both sites.
