The Value of Participation

For many years, those who know me, know that I highly value participation in school-sponsored activities of our students outside of the classroom.  The rewards for being involved are many.  Time management, working toward a common goal, dealing with success and failure, and teamwork are a few of the rewards of being involved in extra-curricular activities.  What people may not realize is the impact it has on the participants in the classroom.

Several years ago, we had compiled the average GPA’s of our students based on their involvement in school-sponsored activities.  I was curious if the trend was the same so recently I asked Brenda Palas to compile the average GPA’s of students that participated in no activities, one activity, two activities, and three or more activities.  Thanks to Brenda for doing this for me.   The results are listed in the table below:

Number of Activities

Average GPA

0

2.80

1

3.12

2

3.18

3 or more

3.50

The results listed in the table include all activities except FFA, not just athletics.  The data would indicate that the more a student is involved, the higher the likelihood of success in the classroom.  There are many reasons this may be true, but I will only mention a couple.  First, students that are involved learn time management skills and make better use of the outside time that they do have.  Secondly, we (coaches, directors, sponsors) stress academic excellence to the participants.  Also, the students take pride in their school and their education.

I believe it is important that everyone be involved in a school-sponsored activity.  As you can see, the returns are many for the students and the community.
